The Llŷn Peninsula

Reaching out from the mountains of Snowdonia towards the Irish Sea is one of the most charming places in Wales. A mysterious land of Saints and Pilgrims, a land that is almost at the edge of the earth, this is Llŷn. The ancient landscape is dominated by the majestic teeth of the Rivals mountain range, and there, sitting like a great throne amidst the heather, is Tre’r Ceiri Iron Age hill fort. This “Town of Giants” is Britain’s best preserved Neolithic settlement.

Nestling far below, you will find Nant Gwrtheyrn, a magical former quarrying village that is now The Welsh Language and Heritage Centre, where you can join in and tackle the Welsh language or learn about its history and culture. The “Language of heaven” is not only alive and well in this part of Wales, but is also prominent in everyday life.

The heart of Llŷn is its people, and according to the bard, Cynan, they are “slow to frown and slow to smile”! On market days, the people of Llŷn descend upon Pwllheli or Porthmadog to seek out a bargain, or just stop and chat. It’s a very sociable community, with many inns hosting traditional entertainment or poetry evenings. The Cricieth annual summer festival of arts climaxes with magnificent fireworks bursting over the ruined castle – and you can draw your own artistic inspiration here amidst the unique culture of Llŷn.

Whilst relaxing on the golden sands and trailing the heritage coastline, it’s difficult not to fall in love with this wonderful part of the world. Here, in this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, to gaze out over the breathtaking landscape is to experience true pleasure.

What is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty?

The main aim of an AONB is to conserve and enhance the natural beauty of an area and is designated mainly on the basis of the unrivalled beauty of its landscape, coastline and islands. Llŷn was one of the first areas to receive this status in 1956.

What is a Heritage Coast?

It includes stretches of beautiful, undeveloped coastline which would be lost forever if they weren’t protected. The aims are, to protect and conserve these vulnerable parts of the coast for the future and to enhance people’s enjoyment in ways that do not risk their conservation. Free the Spirit !

Penrhyn Llŷn

Rhwng y môr a’r mynydd mae un o ardaloedd hyfrytaf Cymru. Gwlad Saint a Phererinion, gwlad sydd bron ym mhendraw’r byd, dyma Benrhyn Llŷn.

Mae’r ardal yn cael ei gwarchod gan fynyddoedd mawreddog yr Eifl, ac yno yn eistedd fel gorsedd yn y grug mae Tre’r Ceiri. Dyma un o fryngaerau mwyaf oes yr haearn.

Yn nythu yng nghesail yr Eifl, mae Nant Gwrtheyrn, hen bentref chwarelyddol hudolus, sydd bellach yn Ganolfan Iaith a Threftadaeth Cymru. Fe ddaw miloedd o bobl yma bob blwyddyn i ddysgu ac i feistroli’r Gymraeg ac i ddysgu am hanes a threftadaeth Cymru. Mae’r iaith yn fyw ac yn iach yn y rhan hon o Gymru, ac yn rhan allweddol o fywyd bob dydd. Hon yw ‘iaith y nefoedd’.

Calon Penrhyn Llŷn yw ei phobl ac, yn ôl y bardd Cynan, maent yn “araf yn gwgu, ac yn araf yn gwenu!” Ar ddiwrnodau marchnad mae trigolion yr ardal yn tyrru i dref i Pwllheli a Phorthmadog i siopa a sgwrsio ac mae ’na gyfle gwych i gael bargeinion ac adrodd straeon dros baned boeth yn un o’r hen gaffis traddodiadol.

Mae hi’n ardal gymdeithasol gyda nifer o dafarndai yn cynnal nosweithiau llawen neu stomp farddonol. Os am geisio meistroli’r gynghanedd fe fyddai wythnos o ymdrochi yn niwylliant unigryw Penrhyn Llŷn yn ddigon o abwyd i’r awen! Wrth ymlacio ar y traethau euraidd ac ymlwybro ar hyd yr arfordir treftadaeth, mae hi’n anodd peidio â gwirioni.

Mae hi’n Ardal o Harddwch Naturiol Eithriadol ac, mae’r balchder i’w weld yn y tir. Ym Mhenrhyn Llŷn mae rhywun yn gallu ymdoddi yn llwyr i fywyd cefn gwlad Cymru. Yma mae ’na gyfle i gefnu ar brysurdeb bywyd ac i brofi yr hen ffordd Gymreig o fyw. Dyma’r lle i ryddhau’r ysbryd!

Beth yw Ardal o Harddwch Naturiol Eithriadol?

Prif nod dynodiad AHNE yw gwarchod a gwella harddwch naturiol yr ardal ac fe’i dynodir yn benodol ar sail harddwch anghymharol y tirwedd, yr arfordir a’r ynysoedd. Llyˆn oedd un o’r ardaloedd cyntaf i dderbyn y statws yma ym 1956.

Beth yw Arfordir Treftadaeth?

Mae’n cynnwys darnau hir o arfordir hardd sydd heb eu datblygu, a all gael eu colli am byth heb eu diogelu. Yr amcanion yw garchod ac amddiffyn y mannau bregus yma o’r arfordir ar gyfer y dyfodol ac i gyfoethogi mwynhad pobl mewn ffyrdd sydd ddim yn ei beryglu.
